Back to Cohen-esque darkness. Half-way through the writing, I felt it had echoes of Pink Floyd’s “Brain Damage” and “Comfortably Numb” in terms of reflecting on mental disturbance.
As no chorus melody muscled its way to the fore, I initially used a voice-over purely as a placeholder. However, lacking alternatives, I made a decision to leave a vague melody in the background but continue with spoken word only.  Speaking (vs. singing) allows significantly more words to emphasise some points and expand ideas.  A spoken chorus also helps to differentiate this song from others.
