Martin: Like many kids in the 60’s, my sister and I were given paint sets that directed you to fill in certain spaces with “numbered” colours. The results were variable but recognisable!
Other references in the song are personal glimpses back into happy childhood/teen memories.
Musically, I was influenced by listening to Steely Dan and Sade whilst composing the lyric (I suspect they may not be impressed).
