Martin: I lived in Bahrain between 1975 and 1980.  The characters in the song all existed and references to various events/places would be recognised by anyone who was an expat in Manama in those years.
Some of the chords were inspired by the feel of “Dreadlock Holiday” (by10CC). The rest of the melody and chords fell into place around that.   Greg came up with the surprise ending.

 

Greg: Trying to re-create an oud sound to fit the main song, I used a harpsichord sample for my MIDI input, and downtuned in severely in an autotune plugin. Cher in reverse!
